Our History
GeSI has successfully driven the sustainability agenda on the global stage for over two decades. Founded in 2001, at a time when the ICT sector was beginning to recognize its pivotal role in addressing global challenges, such as climate change and digital inclusion. The founding members were driven by a shared vision of harnessing technology to enable sustainable development, setting the stage for a collaborative platform where industry leaders could exchange ideas, share best practices, and develop innovative solutions.
GeSI’s growth snowballed from telecommunications to ICT and today, the organization proudly represents members from diverse sectors such as global energy and utilities, transportation and logistics, finance, as well as our more traditional members in telecommunications and ICT. All our members are aligned on the shared goal of using technology to meet the sustainability challenges of today and the future.
GeSI’s thought leadership is underpinned by a long history of independent research. Its Smart Reports and “Digital with Purpose” initiative have demonstrated how digital technologies can address some of the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges. GeSI was among the first to tackle the sustainability challenges specific to the digital industry, including supply chains, conflict minerals, human rights, circular economy, sustainable products, climate change, and science-based targets. The organization has also contributed significantly to global standards and methodologies, such as GHG Protocol Standards for the ICT industry, Scope 3 sector guidance methodology, and climate-related financial disclosures (TCFD).
One of GeSI’s major accomplishments has been our role in driving the European Green Digital Coalition (EGDC) and the development of an evidence-based measurement methodology. This methodology helps determine the net positive impact of digital technologies across all industries, further solidifying GeSI’s role as a leader in aligning digital innovation with sustainability.
GeSI continues to remain at the forefront of advocating for sustainable and ethical practices. Our work touches on new and emerging challenges, such as digital ethics, water scarcity and the governing implications of artificial intelligence.
With a strong foundation built on transparency, inclusiveness, and innovation, GeSI is committed to continuing its leading role in driving the sustainability agenda through the enabling role of technology
