Carbon Accounting for ICT

The best overall guidance for calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has been provided by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol 1, which owns the development and publication of the GHG accounting standards. However, this guidance can be unclear and potentially self-conflicting for the complex ownership, operations and usage models that exist to support IT Service and IT-as-a-service offerings.

To address these issues, GeSI has been working with key industry stakeholders to create this first-of-its-kind series of carbon accounting guidance for ICT industry value chain participants.

Preview:

GeSI offers this guidance in support of the industry’s ongoing efforts to quantify second and higher-order effects, often referred to as the enabling potential of ICT. Our goal is to create an expansive, industry-wide dialogue around both the obligations and opportunities for ICT companies.

This guidance is intended to illustrate both the value and the shortcomings of existing standards rather than provide new ones.

GeSI CEO Luís Neves stated upon the release of the paper, “This report is a crucial step towards decarbonizing digital infrastructure. We are proud to introduce this groundbreaking report on Carbon Accounting. This challenge presents an opportunity to advance the decarbonisation of digital infrastructure and data centres”
