GeSI Welcomes Ultracell Networks as a New Member

Advancing energy-efficient networking for the next generation of digital infrastructure

GeSI is pleased to welcome Ultracell Networks as a new member of the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative community.

Ultracell Networks is a UK-based technology company and University of Leeds spin-off focused on energy-efficient communication and networking technologies. Founded by Professor Jaafar Elmirghani, the company is built on years of research into low-energy network design, with applications across optical communications, cloud and edge networking, and data centre infrastructure.

As AI, cloud computing and data-intensive services continue to grow, the infrastructure behind the internet is becoming a central sustainability question. The challenge is no longer only how to move more data, faster. It is how to build networks that can support the next phase of digital growth while using less energy, improving resilience and reducing environmental pressure.

Ultracell Networks brings a focused perspective to this challenge. Its work addresses the networking layer that connects servers, storage, accelerators and processing systems in cloud and edge environments. By advancing energy-efficient optical and photonic network architectures, the company contributes to one of the most important areas of sustainable digital infrastructure: making the systems that support AI and advanced computing more efficient by design.

This expertise aligns closely with GeSI’s work on responsible digital infrastructure and the sustainable deployment of AI. Through initiatives such as the Data Centres, Energy and Water Working Group, GeSI is bringing together members and partners to address the operational realities of AI infrastructure build-out, including energy demand, resource efficiency, resilience and governance.

“As AI infrastructure scales globally, sustainability can no longer be treated as a secondary consideration of digital growth. Joining GeSI gives Ultracell Networks the opportunity to work alongside global industry leaders to help shape more energy-efficient and sustainable digital infrastructure. We look forward to contributing our expertise in next-generation optical networking and supporting the development of technologies that enable both AI performance and environmental responsibility,” said Daniel Bridges, CEO of Ultracell Networks.

Through its membership in GeSI, Ultracell Networks joins a global community of companies, institutions and partners working to harness digital innovation for measurable sustainability outcomes. GeSI looks forward to collaborating with Ultracell Networks and its members to support more efficient, responsible and future-ready digital infrastructure for the AI era.
