In 2012, GeSI and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) commissioned a study to evaluate over 300 commercially available External Power Supplies (EPSs). The aim was to provide input for ongoing work on standardising eco-friendly solutions for ICT devices, building on the success of the ITU Universal Charging Solution. The study focused on reducing the life-cycle environmental impact of EPSs, particularly in terms of energy efficiency, recyclability, and compatibility with multiple devices.
The report highlights the need for standardisation, identifying trends in de-facto standards for voltage and connector types, alongside opportunities to enhance eco-efficiency by reducing weight, implementing replaceable cables, and improving power efficiency in both low-load and no-load conditions. These insights aim to guide future efforts in making EPSs more sustainable and addressing growing environmental challenges in the ICT sector.
