In late 2015, GeSI released a report building on the insights of the #SMARTer2030 study, analyzing Germany’s climate targets and the critical role ICT can play in achieving them. The report explores 12 ICT use cases to quantify the potential of these technologies in reducing carbon emissions while delivering economic benefits. The findings reveal that ICT-enabled solutions could help Germany significantly reduce CO2e emissions and support its climate goals:
- ICT has the potential to enable a 20% reduction in global CO2e emissions by 2030, helping to stabilize emissions at 2015 levels.
- In Germany, ICT could reduce up to 288 million tons of CO2e emissions by 2030, contributing to 85% of the nation’s required reduction.
- Economically, ICT solutions could generate €234 billion annually in benefits by 2030, equivalent to over 6% of Germany’s current GDP.
The report emphasizes how ICT can drive sustainable growth while advancing Germany’s climate ambitions. Through solutions like e-mobility, smart energy, and e-learning, ICT offers environmental, social, and economic benefits, making it a vital component in the country’s pathway to a low-carbon future.
