In response to the findings of the SMART 2020 report, which highlighted the potential of ICT to reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 15%, GeSI developed the ICT Enablement Methodology, this framework is designed to assess and quantify the carbon-reducing potential of ICT products and services, providing businesses and industries with a clear method to measure the environmental impact of their ICT-enabled solutions.
Building on standards such as the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) guidelines from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the ICT Enablement Methodology streamlines the assessment process with a three-step approach. It allows companies to evaluate the carbon impact of ICT solutions across various sectors, including transportation, buildings, power, and industry. The methodology’s comprehensive approach emphasizes ease of use while maintaining scientific rigor, ensuring that organizations can accurately assess the potential of their ICT solutions to reduce emissions.
To demonstrate its real-world applicability, six case studies were included, showcasing how the methodology can be implemented. These case studies serve as practical examples, highlighting the tangible benefits of ICT in reducing emissions and contributing to sustainability. GeSI emphasizes that ongoing engagement with stakeholders, coupled with continuous refinement of the methodology, is critical to its widespread adoption.
The ICT Enablement Methodology provides a standardized framework for evaluating ICT’s enabling effects, paving the way for broader acceptance and investment in low-carbon technologies. By promoting the use of ICT to combat climate change, GeSI aims to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy, driving progress toward achieving global climate goals.
