Bell wins Clean50 awards for environmental innovation and accomplishment

GeSI would like to congratulate our member, Bell, for being awarded Clean50 Sustainability awards in Canada on 7 October 2022. Bell has shown environmental leadership by establishing more challenging GHG reduction targets since 2017. Bell has been named the first GHG Reductions Champion by Clean 50 in honour of their achievements in lowering the intensity of our operations' GHG emissions. With Bell's GHG emissions per network usage demonstrating a 55% improvement compared to their 2019 baseline, Bell exceeded their objective in 2021 by an additional 15%.

Bell's effort to build solar-powered remote communication towers has been recognized as one of the Clean50 Top Projects for 2023, making it one of the most forward-thinking and inspirational sustainability initiatives carried out in Canada during the last two years. The project, which was created in collaboration with Saint-Augustin Canada Electric Inc., the Interdisciplinary Institute for Technological Innovation (3IT) at the Université de Sherbrooke, and its Nanotechnologies and Nanosystems Laboratory (LN2), replaces diesel generators with solar voltaic cells to supply primary power to remote communication towers (STACE). The project was successful in cutting the amount of diesel used at outlying locations by up to 75%.

Catherine Goyer, Director, Corporate Responsibility and Environment, has also been recognized as one of Canada's Clean50 leaders for 2023 in addition to receiving the Top Project award. This distinction places her among the Canadians who have contributed the most over the previous two years to the country's transition to a sustainable economy. Catherine's leadership of Bell's Corporate Responsibility and Environment team in assisting with the delivery of sustainable solutions is honored by this distinction.
