The Solving the E-waste Problem (StEP) Initiative is an initiative developed by various UN organizations with the overall aim to solve the e-waste problem. Together with prominent members from industry, governments, international organizations, NGOs and sciences/academia actively participating in StEP, we initiate and facilitate approaches towards the sustainable handling of e-waste. In five Task Forces feasible, just and environmentally safe solutions for the e-waste problem are developed through analysis, planning and pilot-projects.

The Solving the E-waste Problem (StEP) Initiative is currently cooperating with the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) on an innovative capacity building project: The E-waste Academy (EWA) for Policymakers and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), mostly collectors and recyclers, in developing countries. EWA is a pioneering concept in research and will foster multi-stakeholder partnerships and collaboration on e-waste policy and management, looking at the e-waste issue in its entirety, rather than through the lens of a specific discipline. Partnership with GeSI is strengthening the inputs from the private sector in order to foster the necessary dialogue between different stakeholders in the policymaking process. Such cooperation, particularly with a few GeSI Members involved in the E-waste Working Group (EWWG), together with involvement of recognized international experts, will enable EWA to be the foremost forum available for participants involved in e-waste system design as well as implementing solutions, to share their knowledge, interact with experts and develop collaborative partnerships fostering high long-term, sustainable solutions and approaches on all policy-related areas related to e-waste - from policy to technology to economics to social aspects.
